This year’s organic trade show was held at the NASC Complex (ICAR), Pusa, New Delhi as against in Bangalore during 2005 and 2006. Ministry of Agriculture and Co-operation, Government of India through National Centre of Organic Farming (NCOF) had kindly spared the space for the event.

Vilas Lokhande, an agriculture graduate and farmer in Jambroon village, 15 kms from Nanded city has devoted one acre of his land for growing soya bean only through traditional methods like using vermicompost for the soil or cow’s urine for pesticides; i.e. organic methods. What is more important is that he has decided not to use chemicals on this plot. On the remaining three acres, he has sowed other oil seeds including soya bean and is tending the crops the way he has been doing all this time using urea and Diammonium Phosphate.

Addressing the farmers and participants at India Organic trade fair today, she said that the disruption of traditional modes of agriculture has resulted in change in nutritional patterns of the population which lead to ‘lifestyle diseases’, while organic diet stresses on traditional food and improves the immune system of the body. Organic cultivation is a holistic system of agriculture with sustainability as its watchword, she added.

IIT Mumbai Sets Up aAQUA - An SMS Based Helpline For Farmers

The Telegraph has a story on an SMS based helpline for farmers set up by IIT Mumbai: aAQUA (almost all questions answered), is a scheme that enables farmers to enquire about rainfall patters, disease forecasts, efficient milking of buffalos, and importantly- providing market information; answers to questions like "the rates for cucumbers in the Kolapur market" and "a list of Indian exporters for stevia". The IIT is apparently in talks with a handset manufacturer for a phone with features just for farmers. Readers will remember that market information is also being provided by Reuters (NSDQ: RTRSY) in India - at Rs. 60 (around $1.5) per month. This goes a step beyond just market information, but one can't really comment on the efficacy of either without giving them a go

Is it a marketing gimmick or is it a back-to-the-roots movement that’s seeing urban India increasingly showing a penchant for organic food? As more and more people make a beeline for the shelves stocking organic food products, whether in boutique grocery shops or the large-format department stores, health considerations seem to be paramount in the minds of consumers. Rashi Sharma, a housewife living in Delhi’s Golf Links regularly picks up food from the Fabindia store in nearby Khan Market. She says: “Given that organic food is grown without the use of any fertilisers or pesticides, it seems a natural, healthier option. I have also picked up herbal tea and organic spices from Delhi Haat, and keep a lookout for more options within the organic range.”

As a result, not only the rich but also higher middle class in the metro cities of India are going for organic food.
