Establishing a Sustainable and Organic Zone (Bio-village) in Kasaragod, Kerala

Project based on Organic adoption, Certification and Market Linkages implemented by incorporating the Bio-village concept.

Kasaragod, Kerala 

Highlights :

  • Govt. of Kerala has announced that Kasaragod district will be made 100% organic by 2015! ICCOA closely associated with the process and initiated the Sustainable Biovillage concept for Kasaragod
  • Project starting with 500 ha, 698 farmers in Pannathady Panchayat. Soon expanding to 2500 ha in 1st phase.
  • Crops in the project include black pepper, nutmeg, ginger, turmeric, coconuts, and others.

Summary :

Project Phase I from 2014 – 2017. 500 ha expanding to 2500 ha this year. Sustainable Bio-Villages integrate 7 distinct components for holistic development of the community.

Malappuram Organic Grower’s Group (M O G G), District Malappuram in an area of 250 Ha.

Project based on Organic adoption, Certification and Market Linkages.

District : Malappuram, State : Kerala, Total Project area : 250 Ha.

Highlights :

  • Project located in Vettilappara, Chungathra, Pothukal, Marutha, Vattamkulam and Tavanur areas, covering 250 ha with 224 farmers.
  • Crops include –Nutmeg,Cocoa,Pepper,Cashew,Turmeric,Ginger,Coconut and Vegetables
  • Project completed IC3 and products and is currently in ‘certified organic’ status.

Summary :

The Project implementation MoU with, Government of Kerala was signed in April 2011. This is an Organic adoption certification and a Market linkage project. Project handed over to Sun star group and directly connected to organic market thought this linkage.

Calicut Organic Grower’s Group (C O G G)

Project based on Organic adoption, Certification and Market Linkages in Kozhikode (Calicut) dist, covering 150 ha.

District : Kozhikode (Calicut), State : Kerala, Total Project area : 150 Ha.

Highlights :

  • .Project located in Pasukadavu and Aroor areas of Kozhikode district ,covering 150 ha with 223 farmers.
  • Crops include –Cocoa,Mango,Pepper,Turmeric,Ginger,Coconut and vegetable.
  • Project completed IC3 and is currently in ‘certified organic’ status.

Summary :

The Project implementation MoU with Government of Kerala was signed in April 2011. This is an Organic adoption certification and a Market linkage project.

A Turn Key project for Adoption & Certification of Organic Project with Jammu & Kashmir Organic Grower’s Group

Project based on Organic Adoption, Certification and Market Linkages

Highlights :

  • Project under Rastriya Krishi Vikas Yojana covering 450 ha with 456 farmers registered.
  • The project is registered in Udhampur district, a major rice belt of the state.
  • Market linkages activity already started, farmers being connected with a rice exporter.

Summary :

MoU was signed on 10th Dec 2011 between Director Agriculture, Govt. of J&K and ICCOA. The project has already received its Organic Certificate status.

 

Promotion of Organic Farming under RKVY covering 1080ha

Project based on Organic Adoption, Certification and Market Linkages

Highlights :

  • The project has formed 11 ICS covering 1080ha and register 1352 farmers
  • ICCOA is associated in drafting the Organic Policy & Roadmap for the State of Himachal Pradesh.
  • Crops of Himachal Pradesh includes – Paddy, Wheat, Tomato, Green Chillies, Black Gram, Lentil, Sesame, Mustard

Summary :

The project awarded to ICCOA on Oct 2013 and is currently completing one year.

 

A turn-key Organic Cluster Project in 1200ha in Himachal Pradesh

Project based on Organic adoption, Certification, System Comparison and Market Linkages.

Highlights :

  • Project located across 3 districts (Solan, Bilaspur & Hamirpur) covering 1200 ha with 1354 farmers.
  • Crops include – Paddy, Wheat,Tomato, vegetables etc.
  • Supply chain activity has already started from Solan district.
  • System comparison study was taken for tomato, capsicum, pea, wheat, maize, mustard and Lentil.
  • Various Model Farm where also developed in Panchayat level

Summary :

The project was signed on 18th of June 2010 between Director of Agriculture, Govt. of Himachal Pradesh, ICCOA and CSKHPKV, Palampur Himachal Pradesh. And the project was launched on 12th July 2010.

 

Establishing Organic Clusters in 1000 ha across 4 districts in Tamil Nadu.

Project based on Organic adoption, Certification and Market Linkages.

Vellore, Erode, Theni, Ramanathapuram, Tamil Nadu 

Highlights :

  • Project located across 4 districts (Vellore, Erode, Theni, Ramanathapuram) covering 1000 ha with 623 farmers.
  • Crops include – Mango, Vegetables, Turmeric, Banana, Muringa and Chillies
  • Organic Vegetable Supply chain initiated in Vellore

Summary :

The Project implementation MoU with TANHODA, Govt of Tamil nadu was signed in April 2013.

Though this is an organic adoption, certification and market linkages project, elements of sustainable bio-village concept are being incorporated in Vellore district initially to bring about a holistic development of the area. The project will also connect “in conversion” produce to buyers in the process ensuring that they get  better prices.

Project based on Organic adoption, Certification and Market Linkages. Covering Two districts of Nagaland spread over 250ha covering 330 farmers.

Nagaland 

Highlights :

  • Project located in two districts (Mon & Dimapur) covering 250 ha with 300 farmers.
  • Crops include – Large Cardamom, Turmeric & Pineapple.
  • Certification Body SGS.
  • Project status Turmeric Certified , Pineapple and Large Cardamom IC-3

Project based on Organic Adoption, Certification and Market Linkages. Covering Two districts of Nagaland spread over 250ha covering 206 farmers.

Nagaland 

Highlights :

  • Project located in two districts (Dimapur & Peren) covering 250 ha with 206 farmers.
  • Crops include – Pineapple, Naga Chili Ginger & Tea, Large Cardamom, Ginger, Potato & Maize.
  • Certification Body One cert

  • Project located across 4 districts (Mokokchung, Wokha,Kohima & Phek) covering 250 ha with 300 farmers.
  • Crops include – Tea, Large Cardamom, Ginger, Potato & Maize.
  • Certification Body Lacon.
  • Project got organic status in the year 2012

Summary :

The Project implementation MoU with Agriculture Department, Nagaland was signed in August 2009.

To ensure continous support to the farmers ICCOA was successful in providing handholding to the farmers by entering into an MOU with an exporter.

Project based on Organic Adoption, Certification and Market Linkages.

Nagaland 

Highlights :

  • Project located across 5 districts (Mokokchung, Wokha, Zunheboto, Tuensang & Peren) covering 1000 ha with 551 farmers.
  • Crops include – Tea, Large Cardamom, Ginger, King/Naga Chili , Maize & Soybean.
  • Certification Body Control Union

Summary :

The Project implementation MoU with Agriculture Department, Nagaland was signed in November 2012.

Though this is an organic adoption, certification and market linkages project. The project will also connect “in conversion” produce to buyers in the process ensuring that they get better prices.

Dimapur Dist, Nagaland 

Highlights :

  • Project starting with 1200 ha, 582 farmers .
  • Major Crops in the project include- Pineapple , Turmeric & Paddy.
  • Certification body SGS.

Summary :

Establishing organic clusters in 500 ha across 2 districts in arunachal pradesh

Project based on Organic adoption, Certification and Market Linkages. Covering Two districts of Arunachal Pradesh spread over 500ha covering 517 farmers.

Arunachal Pradesh  

Highlights :

  • Project located in two districts (Lower Dibang & lower Subansiri) covering 500 ha with 517 farmers.
  • Crop-Ginger.
  • Certification Body SGSIndia Pvt. Ltd. Gurgaon.

Summary :

The Project implementation MoU with Agriculture Department, Arunachal Pradesh was signed in the year 2010.

 

Sikkim: Organic Cluster Project

This is an ICS based service provider project for certification and market linkage covering four gram panchayats spread over 2169 ha covering 1543 farmers.

South Sikkim

Highlights :

  • Sikkim is the first state that will be fully organic by 2015-16.
  • ICCOA was originally associated in drafting the Project Roadmap for converting entire Sikkim into Certified Organic in 03 Phases within 5 years (2010-15).
  • Crops of Sikkim include - Cherry pepper, Buckwheat, Large cardamom, Ginger and Turmeric.

Summary :

Govt of Sikkim started its organic programs way back around 2004, albeit not with a clear roadmap. But Honble Chief Minister, Mr. Pawan Chamling wanted to make Sikkim not just organic by default, bit also 100% organic by design….i.e. certified organic.

In 2010, ICCOA was invited by the then Secretary (Agri), Mr Vishal Chauhan to deliberate on a Strategic roadmap for 100 % Organic Sikkim with certification too. ICCOA also invited the Director of FiBL, Dr Urs Niggli on the behest of Govt of Sikkim and they signed a MoU for technical supports.

In 2010, ICCOA prepared a roadmap for converting Sikkim’s 50,000 ha into certified organic. This project was spread in 3 phases across 5 years – thus covering 50000 ha from 2010-11 to 2015-16.

Model Organic Farms under Rastriya Krishi Vikash Yojana (RKVY), Dept. of Agriculture, Govt. of Assam

Project based on Baseline survey, Internal Control System (ICS) Management of Organic Agricultural project under RKVY.

Highlights :

The project was implemented in phase wise manner in all constituencies of Assam. The DoA- Assam allotted 26 constituencies to ICCOA. The details are as follows-

Phase I (2012-13) covers 8 constituencies

  • Area: 400 ha
  • No. of farmers: 402 
  • Areas of Operation: Four districtsGolaghat, Jorhat, Karbi Anglong, Sivasagar,
  • Major Crops: Paddy, Joha Rice, Turmeric, Ginger, Seasonal Vegetables
  • Certification Agency : Onecert Asia Agri Certification Pvt. Ltd. Jaipur
  • Certification Status: IC-1 (First Year Conversion)

Phase II (2013-14) covers 18 constitutencies

  • Area: 900 ha
  • No. of farmers: 881
  • Areas of Operation: Five districts - Dibrugarh, Jorhat, Karbi Anglong, Sivasagar, Tinsukia
  • Major Crops: Paddy, Joha Rice, Turmeric, Ginger, Seasonal Vegetables
  • Certification agency: Identification of certification agency for phase –II is under process by the Dept. of Agriculture, Assam.

Summary :

MoU was signed on 11th March 2013 between Director Agriculture, Govt. of Assam and ICCOA. All 8 constituencies in phase I have received IC-1 status. In phase II, the baseline survey, registration and training of farmers on “Organic Farming & Certification” is completed.
